Meet the Interns Season 1: Grayson Culliford

Ever since I was young, I remember being fascinated by entrepreneurship– I liked the idea of creating. In first grade, we were tasked to make an invention with a spinner, and my partner and I took to this with great excitement and ease, making a tray that automatically dispensed dog treats while their owners are away. My elementary school and middle school emphasized creating, especially in STEM and technology, all of which were interesting to me.

When I worked as an intern for Melissa Butterworth, she immediately inspired me with her diligence and kindness in discussing the passion she had for her field. My parents are doctors, and even though I am not keen on following their path, I have been hearing about medicine my entire life. I loved how Melissa was able to create a balance of helping others while still in the realm of business. The combination of a field that was both within healthcare and business intrigued me and made me realize that this was something I would be interested in pursuing. The summer I interned with Melissa was an amazing learning experience. I came along on company ‘ride days’ where I could submerge myself in her field of work. She also allowed me to give input on certain projects. For example, with her book, I did research on the layout and organized Zoom calls with contributors. Additionally, I would listen in on her meetings with companies for upcoming deals, also via Zoom. In absorbing these conversations, Melissa taught me the importance of doing research, being well prepared, having stamina and displaying empathy and grace under pressure.

Currently, I am co-President of my high school’s Entrepreneurship and Business club and have established a monthly club meeting in which we invite alumni to talk with us about the specifics of their individual experiences. I am also involved in the school's Investment Club, where we engage in a market simulator which allows us to explore investing at a beginner level.
